July 26th, 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of the landmark civil rights law, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). With the signing of the ADA, discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life became prohibited (by law), and that’s defnitely cause for celebration.
While there are lots of ways to honor the day, from petitioning for an ADA 30th Anniversary Google doodle to using the #ThanksToTheADA hashtag on Twitter, there is still plenty to be done as we work toward equity and a better quality of life for individuals with disabilities. If you’re looking to lend your skills and talent to the cause, here are a few organizations (all hiring!) dedicated to the rights and welfare of individuals with disabilities.
Northwest Access Fund, Seattle, WA
This nonprofit, established by and for individuals with disabilities, is dedicated to promoting access to technology and economic opportunity for individuals with disabilities living in Washington and Oregon. They are currently looking for a Financial Coach & Microloan Officer for each of their Portland, OR and Seattle, WA offices.
Disability Rights Advocates, Berkeley, CA
As one of the leading nonprofit disability rights legal centers in the nation, Disability Rights Advocates’ mission is to advance equal rights and opportunity for people with all types of disabilities across the United States. They’re currently looking for a Litigation Assistant/Paralegal for their New York City office.
Disability Rights Wisconsin, Madison, WI
Focused on protecting the legal rights of individuals with disabilities throughout the state of Wisconsin, this nonprofit is looking for an Administrative Assistant and an Office Coordinator/Media Content Coordinator for their Milwaukee headquarters.
Boston Center for Independent Living, Inc., Boston, MA
A civil rights organization led by people with disabilities, the Boston Center for Independent Living is dedicated to eliminating discrimination and enhancing the independence of their client. Right now they have a number of openings, including a Transition Pathway Services Advocate, an Administrative Support specialist, a Community Nurse Evaluator/Independent Consultant, a Personal Care Attendant/Skills Trainer, and an Independent Living Supports and Services Coordinator.
Villa Esperanza Services, Pasadena, CA
Founded in 1961 and dedicated to the care and education of children, adults, and seniors with disabilities, Villa Esperanza Services includes a speech language center, a community-based employment program, and an integrated adult day program with a presence in 41 cities across the country. They’re in the market for a Grant Writer at their Pasadena, CA location.
Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program, Tuscaloosa, AL
This federally-funded nonprofit provides free legal advocacy services to Alabamians with disabilities, protecting and promoting their civil rights. Their Tuscaloosa location is in search of a Voting Rights Outreach Coordinator.
Summit Assistance Dogs, Anacortes, WA
A Washington state-based nonprofit, Summit Assistance Dogs provides highly-skilled mobility service dogs for individuals with disabilities. They’re looking for a Service Dog Trainer to join their team.
Disability Rights DC at University Legal Services, Washington, D.C.
A public interest legal services agency, Disability Rights DC at University Legal Services provides housing counseling and legal representation for individuals with disabilities in the Washington, D.C. area. They are in search of a Reentry Manager and a Disability Benefits Staff Attorney.
Heartsong, White Plains, NY
Providing clinically-based therapeutic, educational, and rehabilitative creative arts services for individuals with special needs, Heartsong’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities. Currently they are in search of a Program Administrator.
