4 Steps Every MBA Should Make to Break into Tech

In December, the Rice Business Career Development Office (CDO) led 20 MBA students on a tech-focused career trek to Austin, TX. Co-led by my colleague Tiffany Stott, this immersive experience introduced students to Austin’s thriving tech ecosystem, providing firsthand exposure to career opportunities and industry dynamics. The trek proved highly impactful—not only did it deepen students’ understanding of the tech industry, but 87% of participants also reported an increased interest in pursuing careers in tech.

Shaping Your Career with Insights from Tech Leaders

We met with alumni, executives, and business leaders at eBay, Whole Foods, and Capital Factory, earning diverse perspectives from some of Austin’s most innovative technology-driven organizations.

  • We started our day Whole Foods, where students participated in roundtables with business leaders, delving into the intersection of retail and technology. The conversations highlighted how tech-driven solutions are reshaping customer experiences, from supply chain optimization to personalized shopping.
  • At eBay, students engaged with U.S. program leaders to learn about the company’s positioning as a search-intent platform. Discussions highlighted the critical role of data-driven strategies in influencing customer decision-making and maintaining eBay’s competitive edge in the digital marketplace.
  • Our visit to Capital Factory included a tour of the startup accelerator and an inspiring meet-and-greet with founders. Students had the unique opportunity to participate in a fireside chat with entrepreneur Jan Goetgeluk, ’10. Jan’s memorable advice—”Ideas are like buses; there’s one every five minutes”—encouraged students to embrace risk and focus on execution rather than fearing competition.

The trek concluded with a panel discussion featuring Rice Business alumni employed at leading tech companies like IBM, Indeed, and Dell. Their candid advice demystified the often-intimidating journey into tech, offering practical tips on leveraging an MBA for roles in product management, data analytics, and beyond. These engagements not only strengthened students’ understanding of the tech landscape but also helped them begin to connect how their unique skills and interests align with this evolving sector.
