On February 13, Rice Business students stepped into the heart of Houston’s tech ecosystem for the Houston Tech Trek, visiting Microsoft at The Ion. The afternoon was an immersive look at how preparation, positioning, and strategy shape success in competitive tech roles.

Students gathered at The Ion, one of Houston’s central innovation hubs, before spending the afternoon with Microsoft professionals for a structured session that blended insight, interaction, and practical guidance.
Beyond learning about Microsoft’s work and culture, students gained direct feedback on how to position themselves effectively for tech opportunities.
As Elisa Liu (Class of 2027) shared, “The Houston Tech Trek at Microsoft reinforced the importance of tailoring your resume to the specific position. I learned that employers are not just looking for strong experience, but for clear alignment between your skills and the role’s requirements.”
That theme of alignment and intentionality carried throughout the visit. From demo discussions to the career panel, students heard firsthand how tech employers evaluate candidates and what distinguishes those who stand out.

For Phuong Le (Class of 2027), the experience highlighted both the environment and the preparation required for success: “It was a great experience that allowed us not only to learn about the innovation hub in Houston, with its comfortable and modern workspace, but also to participate in a resume workshop.”
Students also emphasized the value of direct access to professionals who were open, engaging, and invested in sharing practical advice. “Highly recommended! The staff was so engaging and the content is so informative and helpful for students,” shared Jane Yang (Class of 2027).

Perhaps most importantly, the trek prompted immediate reflection. “This Trek has helped me change my strategy to be a better fit for Tech roles,” said Zaid Alhilo (Class of 2027). That is the purpose of a Career Trek, helping students clarify their goals. It is the opportunity to test assumptions, refine positioning, and better understand how to translate MBA experience into industry impact.
Houston’s tech ecosystem continues to grow, and experiences like this connect Rice Business students directly to the organizations shaping that growth. When classroom learning meets real-world insight, students leave better prepared, more focused, and ready to compete.

We look forward to continuing to create opportunities that bring students face-to-face with employers, alumni, and industry leaders across Houston and beyond.
