Rice Business MBAs Explore Careers, Companies, and Community in Seattle

Rice Business MBA students traveled to Seattle again this year for a two-day career trek that brought classroom learning to life across some of the world’s most influential companies. From aerospace and technology to healthcare innovation, the experience offered a deep dive into how organizations operate, build products, and create value at scale.

The trek began at the Boeing Customer Experience Center, where students explored the intersection of product design, customer needs, and operational excellence in the aviation industry. Through conversations with leaders and a hands-on facility tour, students gained a clearer understanding of how aircraft innovation evolves from concept to customer experience. For many, this visit stood out as a defining moment. As Phuong Le (Class of 2027) shared, “The most interesting part of the trip was being able to explore airplane prototypes such as the 777 and 787, as well as learning about the new technologies they use to enhance the customer experience.”

At Amazon, students engaged in a series of panels, discussions, and a fireside chat that highlighted leadership, decision-making, and the role of data in shaping strategy. The conversation emphasized how strong leaders combine analytical thinking with close collaboration and communication. Reflecting on the experience, Jane Yang (Class of 2027) noted the impact of hearing how leaders identify challenges by combining data with real team insights and root cause thinking.

The day continued with alumni roundtables and an evening happy hour, where students connected with Rice Business graduates across companies including Google, Nordstrom, and emerging startups. These conversations offered candid perspectives on career paths, team cultures, and the day-to-day realities of working in fast-moving industries. Students consistently highlighted these moments as some of the most valuable, reinforcing the strength and accessibility of the Rice Business alumni network.

On day two, the group visited Microsoft, Philips Healthcare, Salesforce, and Outreach, gaining exposure to a wide range of roles across product management, marketing, operations, and innovation. At Philips, students engaged directly with healthcare technologies through live product demonstrations, connecting business strategy with patient impact. Across each visit, a consistent theme emerged: companies are seeking leaders who can think critically, communicate effectively, and navigate complexity with confidence.

For many students, the trek provided both clarity and inspiration. Ramandeep Kaur (Class of 2027) described it as “a must-do trek for anyone interested in product management, tech marketing, operations, innovation, strategy, analytics, or supply chain,” noting how valuable it was to hear directly from leaders and alumni about the many paths available to MBAs.

The Seattle Career Trek reflects the core of the Rice Business experience. It is hands-on, relationship-driven, and grounded in exploration. By stepping into new environments and engaging directly with professionals, students gain not only insight into industries but also a stronger sense of where they can contribute and lead. Just as important, they build connections with a community that continues to support them long after the trek concludes.
