At the Center of Care: Exploring Healthcare Leadership in Houston

Rice Business MBA students spent a day immersed in Houston’s healthcare ecosystem during a recent career trek, gaining a closer look at how leading organizations are approaching innovation, operations, and patient care in a rapidly evolving industry.

The day began at Houston Methodist, where students were welcomed by alumni and healthcare leaders who offered a thoughtful introduction to the system’s approach to innovation and care delivery. Through a series of sessions and tours, students explored the Virtual Operations Center, engaged with teams driving virtual care, and stepped inside the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation & Education (MITIE). These experiences highlighted how clinical insight and emerging technologies come together to address complex healthcare challenges and improve outcomes.

Students also visited the Houston Methodist Center for Innovation, where conversations focused on building an innovation mindset and leveraging new technologies to enhance safety, quality, and service. Throughout the morning, candid discussions with leaders provided a clearer view into how strategy and execution intersect in a healthcare setting.

In the afternoon, the group traveled to McKesson, where the focus shifted to the broader healthcare supply chain and operational strategy. Students participated in a panel discussion with senior leaders across network operations, analytics, and process improvement, gaining insight into how large-scale organizations navigate complexity while driving efficiency and growth. The visit concluded with networking conversations that allowed students to connect more personally with professionals across the organization.

As Shaun Reghabi (Class of 2027) reflected, the experience offered “a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world leadership across the healthcare ecosystem,” noting the impact of hearing directly from executives navigating innovation, digital transformation, and operational complexity.

Career treks like this one continue to create space for meaningful dialogue between students, alumni, and industry leaders. By engaging directly with organizations across the healthcare landscape, Rice Business students deepen their understanding of the challenges shaping the industry while building relationships that support their long-term career paths.
