As we reach the midpoint of the summer, it is time for MBA students to assess their internship, summer project or short-term contract progress and look strategically toward the future. Whether your current goal is securing a return offer or preparing for second-year full-time recruiting, taking intentional action now will ensure you are positioned for success.
Unlike internship recruiting, second-year full-time recruiting is often less structured and moves much more quickly. Employers expect candidates to hit the ground running. Students who utilize July and August to prepare will find themselves in the strongest position when opportunities accelerate in the fall.
Mid-Summer Check-In: Talking with Your Manager
If you are currently in an internship, we encourage you to schedule a dedicated meeting with your manager or project lead over the next few weeks to discuss your performance. The goal is to understand what success looks like for the remainder of the summer.
Key topics to cover include:
- Feedback on your performance so far
- Areas where you can improve or add more value
- Expectations for the remainder of the internship
- The process and timeline for full-time hiring
How to Frame the Conversation
You do not need to ask directly, “Am I getting an offer?” Instead, approach the conversation from a place of wanting to learn, grow, and improve. Here are two examples of how to frame this discussion:
- “I’ve really enjoyed the experience so far and wanted to check in on how I’m doing. I’d love any feedback on what’s gone well and where I can continue to improve over the rest of the summer. I’m also very interested in staying with the firm after graduation, so I’d appreciate any perspective on what strong performers do to position themselves for full-time opportunities.”
- “I’ve really enjoyed the summer and am interested in continuing with the company after graduation. Could you share how return offer decisions are typically made and anything you would recommend I focus on during the remainder of the internship?”
These conversations are common and expected. Most importantly, they give you time to actively implement feedback while you are still in your role.

If Your Internship Does Not Convert
If your current internship is not one that typically leads to a full-time offer, or if you have decided to recruit in a different industry or role, please schedule time with your CDO advisor as soon as possible.
Because full-time recruiting timelines are compressed, waiting until September will put you behind. Your advisor can help you:
- Refine your target roles and industries
- Develop a realistic, structured recruiting strategy
- Build a tailored networking plan
- Prepare application materials and interview strategies
- Identify important deadlines and upcoming national conferences
Industry Focus: Consulting Recruiting Starts Now
Students interested in full-time consulting roles must begin preparing immediately. Timelines have shifted earlier, and major deadlines will occur before fall classes begin.
- Key Deadline: McKinsey’s application deadline is currently expected to be August 11, nearly a month earlier than last year. Keep a close eye on 12twenty and communications from the Consulting Association for additional firm deadlines.
- New This Year: Consulting Coffee Chats: The CDO will host virtual coffee chats with a limited number of consulting firms on August 10 and 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. CT. Additional details will be posted in 12twenty.
- Networking Strategy: Full-time consulting recruiting typically involves fewer coffee chats than internship recruiting. Focus on quality over quantity. Aim for two to three meaningful touchpoints with each target firm. Update your pitch to reflect your summer accomplishments and reconnect with alumni.
- Case Interview Preparation: Do not wait for the semester to start. Aim to complete at least 30 practice cases before your interviews. Utilize resources like the WayFinder Second-Year Bootcamp, RocketBlocks, the Rice Casebook, and the Consulting Association WhatsApp group to find casing partners.
- Behavioral Interview Preparation: Develop six to eight strong STAR stories that highlight your leadership and problem-solving skills, including your summer internship accomplishments. Practice with classmates, career advisors, and tools like Big Interview.
Fall Conferences Can Be Critical
For many second-year students, national fall conferences are among the best avenues for securing interviews and full-time offers.
If you plan to attend conferences such as NBMBAA, ROMBA, Prospanica, veterans-focused conferences, or other affinity group and industry events, you should begin preparing your materials now. These events are highly competitive and bring together top talent from MBA programs across the country. Success requires a polished resume, a clear target list of companies, a strong pitch incorporating your summer experience, and extensive employer research.
