As you begin your second year at Rice Business, recruiting may feel familiar—but 2Y recruiting is not simply a repeat of internship recruiting.

Full-time recruiting can be faster, less structured, and more self-directed. Some employers have defined hiring plans, while others recruit as business needs emerge—sometimes with short timelines or later in the year.
Here’s how to stay ready and approach 2Y recruiting strategically.
1. Don’t Assume Full-Time Recruiting Will Look Like Internship Recruiting
One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a 2Y is expecting the same recruiting process you experienced as a 1Y.
Some industries continue to use highly structured recruiting timelines, but many full-time opportunities are filled on a more just-in-time basis. Employers may not know exactly how many roles they have available until later in the semester, or even later in the academic year.
A quiet week in September does not necessarily mean there are no opportunities ahead. At the same time, when an opportunity does appear, the process can move quickly. An employer may post a position, begin reviewing candidates, and start interviewing in a relatively short period of time.
Keep your resume current. Know your target industries, functions, and employers. Continue building relationships. And be ready to act when the right opportunity comes along.
2. Make Sure Employers Can Find You in 12twenty
Keeping your 12twenty profile current helps the Career Development Office understand your career interests and connect you with relevant employers and opportunities. Take a few minutes now to make sure your profile reflects what you are actually looking for this year. In particular:
- Add your resume to the relevant industry resume book in 12twenty. Resume books are one of the ways employers and the Employer Engagement team can identify students with relevant interests and experience.
- Update your career preferences, including your preferred industries, functions, and geographic locations. This creates a more curated experience in 12twenty, making it easier to find the right opportunities.
- Review and update your target employers. Your interests may have changed significantly since you first arrived at Rice Business.
- Upload your current resume. Make sure it reflects your internship, summer experience, recent projects, leadership roles, and any new skills or accomplishments.
Keeping this information current helps us provide more tailored opportunities and makes it easier to connect you with employers seeking students with your background and interests.
3. Use Employer Access Strategically
As a first year, there can be value in exploring broadly. By your second year, your approach should become more intentional. That does not mean you should only attend events hosted by companies where you already plan to apply. Employer programming can still be an excellent way to discover organizations, industries, or roles you had not previously considered.
But you also do not need to attend everything. Before registering for an employer event, ask yourself:
What am I hoping to learn or accomplish?
Maybe you want to learn more about an industry. Maybe you are trying to build a relationship with a target company. Maybe you want to understand an employer’s hiring timeline. Or perhaps you simply want to expand your professional network.
Having a purpose will make your conversations more meaningful, and help you decide where to invest your limited time.
4. Remember: 2Y Recruiting Moves Fast
One of the realities of 2Y recruiting is that opportunities do not always arrive with a long runway.
A role may be posted with a relatively short application window. An employer you met earlier in the semester may suddenly have an opening. A conversation at an event may quickly turn into an interview.
This is why relationship-building early in the year matters, even when there is not yet a job posting attached to the conversation. If you wait until a position appears to begin researching the company, meeting people, or figuring out your story, you may already be behind.
Do the groundwork now so that when an opportunity emerges, you can focus on putting together a strong application and preparing for the interview.
5. Treat Networking as Part of the Recruiting Process
Networking is not separate from recruiting. Particularly in a more just-in-time hiring environment, relationships can help you understand where opportunities may be developing before they are widely visible.
Reconnect with people you met during your first year. Follow up with employers you spoke with previously. Reach back out to alumni working in your target organizations or industries. And remember that networking does not always have to begin with, “Are you hiring?”
Some of the most useful conversations are about understanding the business, learning about someone’s career path, or getting perspective on how an industry is changing. Those relationships become especially valuable when hiring needs arise later.
6. Start With Early Networking Night on August 25
One of your first opportunities to put this into practice is Early Networking Night on Tuesday, August 25.
Before you arrive, review the participating employers and identify several organizations you want to prioritize. Research them enough to understand their business and think about what you genuinely want to learn.
Ask about their business priorities. Learn what types of MBA talent they typically hire. Ask how and when they anticipate recruiting this year. And after the event, follow up with the people you met. A five-minute conversation at Early Networking Night may not immediately result in an application, but it could be the beginning of a relationship that becomes important later in your search.
