As you evaluate opportunities, a consistent, thoughtful approach can help you assess fit, reduce risk, and move forward with confidence. Use the following as a practical guide throughout your search.
1. Ask Thoughtful, Evaluative Questions
Strong opportunities tend to hold up well under thoughtful questions. Taking an active role in the conversation can help you better understand both the role and the organization.
Consider asking:
- What problem is the company solving and for whom?
- What traction has the business achieved?
- What does success in this role look like in the first 90 days?
- What are the company’s current priorities and challenges?
Well-prepared employers will generally welcome this level of engagement and see it as a sign of genuine interest.
2. Pay Attention to Work Authorization and Compliance
For international students, understanding how an employer approaches work authorization is an important part of the process.
Be cautious if anyone: (1) Promises guaranteed sponsorship; (2) Offers to arrange work authorization outside official channels; or (3) Encourages misrepresentation of your status.
When in doubt, it is always best to verify processes through official sources rather than relying on informal assurances.
3. Trust Your Judgment if Something Feels Off
If an opportunity raises concerns:
- Pause communication
- Avoid sharing personal information
- Document the interaction
- Share details with the CDO.
You should feel confident in the opportunities you pursue.
4. Understand What a Professional Process Looks Like
Most MBA-level recruiting processes include: (1) Clear job descriptions; (2) Multiple interview stages; (3) Transparent compensation discussions; and/or (4) Written offer letters.
You should have the time and information needed to fully evaluate a role.
5. Know When to Involve the CDO
