Overview:

Summary:

The National Urban League (NUL) seeks a Manager, Entrepreneurship in the Entrepreneurship and Business Services division. Under the direction of the Vice President, Entrepreneurship and Business Development Division (EBDD) the Manager will provide oversight, technical assistance and support to affiliates engaged in entrepreneurship activities, particularly those in the EC Program network, and ensure that EC Program, affiliate, and program investor goals are met.

The Entrepreneurship Center Program (ECP) enables minority entrepreneurs to take advantage of new business opportunities and qualify for financing that will lead to high-level business growth through the provision of proper management skills. Entrepreneurs who qualify for the program receive individualized management assistance and group training services designed to increase their business acumen and ability to operate their businesses on a profitable basis, increase their market share and offer living wage employment opportunities to residents in their market area.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

Affiliate and Partner Engagement and Support

  • Assist in the development and production of program reports on services provided through the Entrepreneurship Center Program as requested by program investors, NUL Board Trustees and senior leadership.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and attend, as requested, meetings with staff of the Partnerships & Advancement and Marketing & Communications Departments to promote the Entrepreneurship Center programs and solicit new program investors.
  • Collaborate with other national economic development providers to identify the needs of minority entrepreneurs and create or join existing collaborative activities to address those needs.
  • Work with NUL Entrepreneurship Center Program affiliates to populate and develop external subject sources to populate the nul.org website with topical business information and success stories.
  • Work with Divisional Vice President to develop and distribute a periodic newsletter relating to minority business and/or economic development that can be distributed to program clients, other stakeholders, and colleagues.

Program Delivery

  • With Divisional Vice President, oversee management of sub-grants that are provided to Urban League program affiliates to ensure they are on track to meet or exceed performance targets and provide high quality program services; and develop and implement corrective actions, and draft and share recommendations for programmatic enhancements with affiliates, as necessary.
  • Track and monitor achievement of annual business plan targets and outcomes of the affiliates for business training and consulting services; track and monitor achievement of goals related to client connections to financing, bonding, and contract opportunities.
  • Work with Entrepreneurship Center Directors to ensure that the centers contribute as per their individual annual business plans toward the completion and execution of EBDD scorecard goals as provided to the NUL senior management and Board of Trustees.
  • Review EC annual business plans and monthly client management system reports to ensure that all centers are progressing toward annual goals and that proposed work plans are in sync with NUL and EBDD program goals. Review and process monthly invoices for program affiliates for service reimbursement.
  • Perform site visits as needed to ensure program progress and provide technical assistance as needed.
  • Assist in the development of the annual Small Business Matters Entrepreneurship Summit, NUL Legislative Policy Conference, Whitney M. Young, Jr. Urban Leadership Conference, and other divisional events as needed.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or closely related discipline. MBA preferred.

Experience:

  • At least three years of experience working with nonprofit organizations, economic development groups, and financial service firms.
  • At least three years of experience in the area of entrepreneurship development program management.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the entrepreneurial skill development needs of minority entrepreneurs.
  • Experience working in an affiliate network setting a plus.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Conversant and passionate about the intersection between program, policy and advocacy in the area of entrepreneurship development.
  • An understanding of the impact of race, class, culture and language on community development success and a commitment to reducing racial inequality; a thorough comfort with and appreciation for diversity.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace, juggle multiple projects and thrive under pressure.
  • Results oriented; detail oriented.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, including conveying and receiving information and ideas through a variety of media.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to research, compile, analyze, and prepare statistical and administrative reports.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • This position is hybrid.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
